At just three years old, Noah began experiencing seizures that would shape the course of his life. Over the years, he underwent six brain surgeries, with his final and riskiest operation taking place at age 14. Doctors warned of potential outcomes including loss of speech, vision, or mobility, but without the surgery, there was a chance he would not survive. That life-saving procedure marked a turning point in Noah’s journey.
Following years of health struggles, recovery, and setbacks in communication and learning, Noah began to make progress. By 16, his brain had healed enough for him to join the School-to-Work program at Ashwaubenon High School, a partnership with Goodwill NCW aimed at preparing students for the workforce.
When Noah began the program at the Ashwaubenon Goodwill store, even simple changes in routine were challenging. He would freeze when approached by customers and struggle with frustration if he made a mistake. But with the continued support of his coaches, teachers, and the Goodwill team, Noah began to grow. He gained confidence, started helping customers, and began building meaningful relationships with coworkers. His coach, Tammi, would eventually tell him, “You got this – you don’t need me anymore.”
Now, after completing his time in the program, Noah has achieved something extraordinary: he is a full-time team member at Goodwill, earning benefits, saving money, and building his future. He recently bought a 2024 Mitsubishi Mirage and even started his retirement fund, all by the age of 19. His next goal is to buy his own home.
When asked about Goodwill and the School-to-Work program, Noah’s mom said, “Other places wouldn’t have given him the chance. If they did, they may not have been patient or willing to work through his barriers like Goodwill. But I’m excited about Noah’s future because he loves working. I’m just so happy for the man he turned into.”
Noah’s story is a powerful example of resilience, determination, and the impact of opportunity. His transformation from a quiet, hesitant student to a confident, reliable employee has not only changed his life but has also inspired those around him.
Congratulations to Noah, Goodwill NCW’s Edgar J. Helms Achiever of the Year, for proving what’s possible with the right support and an unstoppable spirit.
