Give new life to a thrifted tee with this simple and eye-catching reverse tie-dye technique! This project is a perfect blend of science and style — and it all starts with a basic cotton shirt you can find at your local Goodwill NCW.
Instead of adding color like traditional tie-dye, we’re removing it first with bleach, then bringing in bold hues for a look that’s totally unique. Here’s how to DIY a reverse tie-dye shirt:
DIY Reverse Tie-Dye Project Steps
Supplies You’ll Need:
- A 100% cotton shirt (dark colors work best!)
- Bleach
- Water
- Hydrogen peroxide
- Fabric dye
- Soda ash
- Rubber bands or string
- Gloves and a well-ventilated space
01
Prep your shirt
Start by getting your shirt damp with water — this helps the bleach apply evenly.
02
Shape your style
Twist, scrunch, or spiral the shirt and secure it with rubber bands.
03
Apply the bleach
Mix a solution of equal parts bleach and water. Wearing gloves, apply the solution directly onto the shirt using a cup or squeeze bottle. Let it sit for 10 minutes.
04
Time for a peroxide bath
Without rinsing, move the shirt directly into a hydrogen peroxide and water solution and let it soak for 20 minutes to neutralize the bleach.
05
Soak in soda ash
Then, transfer the shirt straight into a soda ash and water solution (following package directions) and let it soak for another 20 minutes.
06
Time to dye
Apply your favorite fabric dye to the bleached areas.
07
Wash, dry & show it off
Let the dye set according to package instructions — usually several hours or overnight — then rinse, wash, and dry.
And that’s it — a bold, one-of-a-kind piece that’s fun to make and even more fun to wear!
