Create a fun spring bag with thrifted fabric from Goodwill North Central Wisconsin!
DIY Tote Bag Project Steps
Supplies You’ll Need:
- 2 Different fabrics – one “main” fabric, and one fun spring fabric
- Scissors
- Sewing machine or a needle and thread
- Pins
- Ruler/Tape measure
- Iron
01
Iron your thrifted fabrics
02
Cut into sections
- Straps: cut two 4.5×40” pieces of your main fabric
- Pockets – cut two 6×7” pieces of your fun spring fabric
- Outer sides – cut two 18×10” pieces of your main fabric
- Base – cut one 18×13” piece of your main fabric
- Liner – cut one 18×32” piece of your main fabric
03
Create the straps
Iron the 4.5×40” pieces in half lengthwise, then again for quarter width. Sew along the edges of each piece.
04
Build the pocket and attach straps
Using the 6×7” piece, fold over the top twice to a quarter inch in length and sew it down. Pin this onto bottom center of the 18×10” piece. Sew both ends of the strap onto either side of the pocket, making sure not to go all the way to the top.
05
From the other side
Repeat steps 3 & 4.
06
Attach the base of the bag
Lay the 10×13” piece on top of the outer bag layer and sew. Lay your second outer bag piece face down and sew. Fold in half, with the outer pockets facing each other and sew. Pucker the corners of the base, sew at 5.5 in across and cut off the excess.
07
Create the inner liner
Fold the 18×32” piece in half and sew along the sides, leaving the top open and half of one side open for your inverse gap. Slide the liner over the outer pieces, including the straps on each side. Sew around the edges until you reach the inverse gap. Pull everything right side out. Sew the gap closed.
08
Add the finishing touches
Tuck in the inner lining of the bag. Sew down the top of the bag, making sure to sew down your straps.
