Welcome to another fun DIY project from Goodwill NCW! With a little spray paint and some creative stenciling, you can transform a thrifted find into a unique and festive addition to your winter décor. Let’s get started!
01
Gather supplies
- A thrifted serving tray
- Spray paint (Your choice of color)
- Painter’s tape
- Winter-themed stencils (snowflakes, reindeer, snowmen, etc.)
- Acrylic paint in contrasting colors
- Paintbrushes/paint sponge
- Clear sealant (optional)
- Newspaper or a drop cloth
02
Prep the serving tray
Start by cleaning your serving tray to remove any dirt or grime. Once it’s clean and prepped, wipe it down with a damp cloth to remove any dust.
03
Apply a base coat
Take your chosen spray paint and shake it well. Lay down newspaper or a drop cloth in a well-ventilated area and place the serving tray on top. Apply a thin, even coat and let it dry for the time recommended on the paint can. Depending on the paint, you may need multiple coats for full coverage.
04
Stencil your design
Get creative with snowflakes, reindeer, snowmen, or other winter stencils to create a festive look. Secure the stencils with painter’s tape to prevent them from shifting. Using a contrasting acrylic paint color and a paintbrush, carefully fill in the stencil design. Be sure not to use too much paint at once to avoid bleeding under the stencil. You can apply multiple thin coats if needed. Remove the stencil while the paint is still wet for a crisp design.
05
Optional sealant
If you want extra durability, you can apply a clear sealant to protect your design. Follow the instructions on the sealant can and make sure to apply it in a well-ventilated area.
06
Display your winter wonderland tray
Once everything is dry and sealed (if desired), your upcycled winter-themed serving tray is ready to be put on display! Use it as a centerpiece for your winter gatherings, a festive catch-all or even a beautiful gift for a loved one.
With a little creativity and some basic materials, you can turn a thrifted serving tray into a winter wonderland masterpiece.
This DIY project not only saves you money but also helps keep items out of the landfill. Happy crafting!
