When looking for a job, a well-crafted resume can be the key to opening the door to an interview. However, with hundreds of candidates for every job, how do you make your resume stand out. Here are a few tips that can get you to that next step.
Keep it simple.
According to recent studies, 99% of all Fortune 500 companies, 70% of large companies and 20% of small and midsized companies use an Applicant Tracking System (ATS). What is ATS? It is software that analyzes applicants to find the best fits for a job. To ensure that your resume has the best chance with ATS:
- Match your resume to skills in the job description.
- Use the right format: Choose a chronological or hybrid resume format, as they are easiest for the ATS to parse.
- Use simple, clear language throughout your resume.
- Don’t use images, graphics, tables, or columns, or go overboard on colors, fonts or odd formatting.
- Submit your resume as a DOCX or PDF unless the job posting specifies otherwise. These file formats are widely supported and help ensure your resume displays and scans correctly.
Keep it recent.
When it comes to your work history, going back 10-15 years should suffice. It helps when you tailor the details of your most current work experience to the prospective job.
Keep it relevant.
Include those technical skills, certifications and coursework that match the job requirements, add and emphasize any certifications or credentials that tie into the prospective job. Also, feel free to add the special skills that will help you stand out from other candidates (like foreign languages and soft skills).
Keep it compelling.
Back up your skills with achievements. Let a prospective employer know how your work benefited your company or department. For example: “Created a retail promotion that led to an increase in foot traffic by 20%.”
