Fall is my favorite season for fashion. It’s cute, cozy, and comfortable, all words that perfectly describe one of my favorite fall fashion staples: the blanket scarf.
On a recent thrifting adventure at my local Goodwill NCW store, I found this lovely black-and-brown blanket scarf. I knew it would complement my wardrobe beautifully, and I could already picture all the creative ways I could style it.
Here are five of my favorite ways to style a blanket scarf this fall:
Classic Loop/Infinity Scarf
When you think of a blanket scarf, this is probably the style that immediately comes to mind. Simply loop the scarf once around your neck, leaving the ends hanging evenly in front. You can also tie the ends together to create an infinity loop.
It’s classic, simple, and incredibly easy to style! This look pairs especially well with a long-sleeve top or jacket.

Triangle Loop
This style is similar to the classic loop, but with a twist. Instead of wrapping the scarf around your neck as-is, start by folding it in half and then folding it diagonally. Hold the scarf in front of you with the triangle point facing downward, then bring the other two points around your neck and tie them together. This fold creates a more angular shape in front rather than the rounded shape of the classic loop. Depending on your outfit or how bulky your jacket is, this can be a great alternative to the traditional style.

Belted Shawl
I love this option when I need to look put together in a pinch. Start with a simple long-sleeve top, jeans or leggings, and boots. Then, wrap your blanket scarf around your shoulders like a shawl, keeping the scarf fabric wide. Finally, add a belt around your waist, securing it over the blanket scarf. I love this style because it’s relatively effortless, but the finished look feels so polished and thoughtfully put together.

Bracelet Hold
Picture a bolo tie: one loop with a decorative slide that can be adjusted to tighten or loosen it. That’s similar to the look we’re creating here.
Start with your scarf unfolded and work the ends through the center of a bracelet. Slide the bracelet up or down until the cinch sits where you like it. You can also swap the bracelet for a brooch or another piece of decorative jewelry that helps bring the scarf together. This style looks especially great paired with a long coat.

Scarf and Cap
As we transition from fall into winter, this styling option will keep you looking chic while staying extra cozy! All you need is a baseball cap and your blanket scarf. If you have long hair, you can also use a hair tie or scrunchie to help keep your hair secured underneath the scarf.
Start with a classic loop and put on your baseball cap. Take one of the loose ends of the classic loop – the end that was wrapped around last – and pull it through the scarf loop. Then, lift the loop at the back of your neck to create a hood.

More Ways to Use a Blanket Scarf
Blanket scarves aren’t just great for wearing and styling. They can also have plenty of practical uses around your home! Use one as the base of a gift basket to add height and cushion to other items. Think of it as a “filler” item that’s both practical and usable. You can also drape a blanket scarf over the back of a chair at home or work for a pop of color and an extra-cozy vibe. And if you have a sewing project in mind, you could even repurpose a blanket scarf into something completely new. The possibilities are endless!
The next time you’re at your local Goodwill NCW, don’t skip the scarf section. You may just find your new favorite accessory for the season. Happy thrifting!
