A DIY Bowl Planter proves a thrifted bowl can hold more than leftovers—it can spark a whole new idea.

This project started with a plastic metallic bowl from Goodwill NCW that felt too fun to leave behind. With a few drilled holes and a plate found in the next aisle, it quickly transformed into a simple, stylish planter ready for spring growth.

This DIY is quick, budget-friendly, and gives overlooked pieces a fresh purpose while supporting opportunities in our local communities.

DIY Bowl Planter Project Steps

Supplies You’ll Need:

  • Plastic or lightweight bowl
  • Plate to use as a drip tray
  • Drill with a small bit
  • Potting soil
  • Your favorite plant or seeds
  • Gardening gloves

Pro tip: Bowls with interesting colors or finishes make especially eye-catching planters.

01

Drill the Drainage Holes

Flip your bowl upside down. Using a small drill bit, add several holes to the bottom so extra water can escape.

This step is quick, easy and instantly transforms the bowl into planter-ready territory.

02

Pair with a Plate

Pair with a Plate

Find a plate that complements your bowl and place it underneath to catch drips.

Mixing and matching pieces across the store is half the fun, and it makes the finished planter look intentionally coordinated.

03

Fill and Plant

Add potting soil, nestle in your plant or seeds and place the bowl-turned-planter on its new matching tray.

That’s it. Simple, charming and ready to brighten a windowsill, patio or desk.

A little creativity, a thrifted bowl and a few minutes of crafting can grow something beautiful.
