Wisconsin – Consumers are expected to spend a record-high $13.5 billion on Halloween this year, according to the National Retail Federation’s (NRF) annual survey conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics. That’s more than last year’s projected $13.1 billion. While the holiday remains popular, consumers will be shopping with affordability in mind and Goodwill North Central Wisconsin (NCW) allows shoppers to be creative on a budget.
According to Goodwill Industries International’s annual survey, more than half (53%) shop or would shop secondhand for Halloween to save money. Other reasons include stretching the Halloween budget further (37%), decorating the home affordably (34%), finding inspiration (32%), treasure hunting (30%) and shopping more sustainably (27%).
Shoppers at Goodwill NCW retail store locations across its region served can find secondhand costumes that are ready to wear or create their own social media-ready unique look. The NRF study found that 50% of Americans plan to dress in costume this year. Top costumes for kids (in order of popularity) include Spiderman, their favorite superhero and princess. Top costumes for adults include a witch, vampire and Batman.

“We’re seeing strong interest in DIY and customization,” said Julie Deming, Vice President of Retail Store Operations at Goodwill NCW. “Consumers aren’t just buying a costume; they’re creating an experience and putting their own spin on it without breaking the bank.”
Shoppers at Goodwill NCW not only find one-of-a-kind looks, but they can also feel good about their Halloween purchases. Goodwill NCW store sales support job programs that help individuals in our communities achieve sustained employment and improved financial stability. In addition, by shopping secondhand and donating their costumes at the end of the season, we are keeping them out of landfills.
